If you think there might be a busted pipe under your home's foundation, there are a few things you can look for. Maybe one of these things already tipped you off and you need to know how to find out for sure. Here’s how to diagnose a busted pipe and what to do next.
There are a few signs to look for if you think you may have a busted pipe. These signs include:
Freezing Temperatures - If the temperatures have been freezing, your pipes may have broken. It’s good to keep the recent temperatures in mind while looking for some of these other signs to see if you have a busted pipe.
Leaks & Water Damage - If you’re experiencing leaks or damage throughout your house, you may have a busted pipe. Look specifically at the walls and floor, as well as the areas where water or sewer are connected in the house.
Increased Water/Sewer Bill - If you’ve noticed a spike in the price of your bills, there’s reason for concern. Bills do typically fluctuate depending on the time of year, so it’s good to look at your bill history over time to get a better idea. Compare your bills to the ones from the same time last year to get a good idea of if there’s been an unusual increase or not.
No or Low Pressure - If you’re suffering from low or no pressure, you’ve most likely got a problem with your pipes that needs to be checked out. It may be a blockage or a busted pipe.
A Strange Smell - If you’re experiencing a strange smell coming from your pipes, walls, or flooring, it may be a busted pipe leaking out water or waste.
How Do You Find Out for Sure?
Now that you know what to look for, it’s time to get the damage assessed and find out for sure. Sometimes the symptoms of a busted pipe and a blocked pipe can be the same or similar, or there may be another issue. To find out what’s really going on, it’s best to have a professional come check things out.
If you want to find out what's happening as quickly and as easily as possible, have a video inspection done. Having a video inspection done will allow your professional to see what's going on before digging up the yard to get under the house. It will also give you a chance to see if there are any other issues and provide a record for insurance and later work that may need to be done.
